This past weekend the United Albertan Paddling Society was able to send 16 instructors to the 2024 Alberta Whitewater Association Western Whitewater Symposium! In part thanks to the InMotion Network Promoting Physical Activity for Girls and Women Take the Lead funding, this was the first year we had an equal representation of women instructors! Thank you to the AWA for their work in applying and securing grants for this weekend. Shoutout to all of our volunteer instructors who attended, and to everyone who supported our Paddling Film Festival (proceeds were used in-part to support this initiative).

Female athletes are 3x more likely to quit sport than their male peers. Women and girls experience sport differently and therefore, sport programming must be delivered and structured uniquely.
The “She Belongs” report from 2020 found that female athletes listed “social acceptance” as their number one factor for what creates a positive sports experience. Bullying, team dynamics, relationships, and culture are critical factors that sport leaders MUST consider in order to keep females in sport.

Today and everyday, sharing the stories of women and girls in sport, physical activity, and recreation.
The Alberta Chinese Cultural Education Society offered the Swim Against the Stream program for women in the winter/spring of 2023. This project was in response to community need and their mission to eliminate barriers to accessing recreational sports for low-income families.
Swim Against the Stream had over 150 women participants attending the drop in program that ran from February to August 2023. The majority of the participants were from immigrant families and for many, this was their first experience learning to swim. The program was accessible to women in the community, had attendees ages 24-69, had coaches from different cultural backgrounds, and supported participants with a variety of abilities.
Participants enjoyed everything about this program; the coaches, the location, the time and dates, the volunteers, the group chatting, the connection and reconnection with friends in the community.

Alberta Whitewater Association received a Take the Lead grant from the InMotion Network in the spring/summer of 2023. This project provided support for 2 women to develop their leadership through Swiftwater Rescue training. TThis training further supported the roles of the two coaches, Kate and Angela, in coordinating the annual Women's Weekend of Paddling hosted in the Rocky Mountain House area every August.
With Alberta Whitewater's goals of creating more inclusive and welcoming environments for everyone to participate in their sport, supporting more women to embrace coaching roles is important. The organization will continue its work toward gender equity at all levels by addressing barriers to participation.
Let’s this !

Each element depicted on the flag was carefully selected by Survivors from across Canada, who were consulted in the flag’s creation.
