To kick start our look into African Diaspora artists the Art History DSC presents - Portals by Nijideka Akunyilli Crosby
Nijideka Akunyilli Crosby was born in Enugu, Nigeria, in 1983. However, the artist spent her adolescent years traveling and moving from Nigeria and the United States. This combination of cultures is often reflected in her work by the refences of both old masters and Nigerian pop culture within the same settings. Crosby is most known for her unique style of layering painting. In which the artist combines a variety of photographic images that reference from Nigeria culture, American politics, and Crosby’s upbringing. She combines these images which she refers to as "Transfers," with detailed painted images to create one homogeneous work. Her work Portals perfectly demonstrates this technique and the artist's ability to merge both Nigerian and American culture together. Crosby has stated that this self-portrait is not meant to be viewed from one angle. Viewers are encouraged to walk around when examining the work, as certain “transfers” can only be revealed at particular angles. Interestingly, only Crosby herself can fully relate and recognize all of the transfers that are included in this work. Crosby has accumulated these ready-mades from a variety of different places. Some are popular images that circulated Nigeria in magazines and popular culture. Others are photographs from her childhood. This creates a simultaneously public and private image. Portals invites the viewer to look into a Nigeran life, stylized in a western eye.

If we don’t amend history by making new images and new representations, we are always going to be excluding ourselves.
