Yesterday, our community won the National Science Foundation (NSF)'s Regional Innovation Engine Award. This community partnership was led by Dr. Ahsan Choudhuri, Associate Vice President of the Aerospace Center, and Dr. Ryan Wicker, Director of the W.M. Keck Center for 3D Innovation at UTEP. The grant process selected 10 award winners from a highly competitive field of 200 national applicants for the transformative investments that could be worth up to $160 million over ten years. With this new award, the two engineering professors have delivered over a quarter of a billion dollars of economic development investments to our region on top of their already significant grants for research into aerospace, defense and advanced manufacturing. The longtime friends and frequent research collaborators share a dream of fostering a vibrant aerospace and defense advanced manufacturing sector in El Paso so that all of the region’s residents have a viable path to the middle class. They took a few minutes to enjoy the sunshine before heading back to their labs to continue work towards their audacious goal.
