team Tromp
Kudos to members of the Dutch Navy who put together a team, raised funds, and individually ran either the 5K or 10K. HNLMS Tromp is a significant vessel in the Royal Netherlands Navy with an operational history of participating in numerous international missions and exercises. It has been involved in anti-piracy missions, humanitarian aid, and disaster relief efforts. Team members expressed that they were not used to running in the heat and humidity that Hawaii’s summer weather is known for.
Wish we captured all the teams from this year’s Freedom Run and Walk for Epilepsy Awareness, but glad to highlight the teams we could rally together at the end. 💜😊💜👏🏼

In honor of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month we are offering a national training virtually on Zoom on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at 10:00 am HST or 4:00 pm EST.
You can sign-up for the training and register with the link in bio.
While the research available on Asian American communities and epilepsy is limited, according to Epilepsy and Behavior, 140,000 Asian American adults in the United States have epilepsy. This means about 0.6% of Asian Americans have epilepsy. Due to the challenges of collecting data, as well as fear and confusion about having and disclosing an epilepsy diagnosis, the number of Asian Americans with epilepsy could be much higher.
Lack of understanding about epilepsy, along with challenges finding affordable, quality care available in Asian and Pacific Island languages, can make it hard for many Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders with epilepsy to live full and healthy lives. In addition, some people have negative perceptions about epilepsy, such as the mistaken belief that epilepsy has a spiritual cause or is a mental illness. Talking about epilepsy is often seen as taboo, not something shared outside of the family. Additionally, some providers have inadequate knowledge and lack of training in cultural humility, making it harder to have honest and productive conversations between patients and their healthcare teams.
💜
Happy 💜 PURPLE Day💜!
is a global movement to raise awareness of epilepsy! 🟣 Let’s start here:
The word “epilepsy” simply means the same thing as “seizure disorders.” It does not state anything about the cause of the person’s seizures or their severity.
Epilepsy is the fourth most common neurological disorder in the world. If you have epilepsy, surges of electrical activity in your brain can cause recurring seizures.
Everyone is encouraged to show their support by wearing purple or highlight anything purple to shine light on epilepsy.

The Epilepsy Foundation of Hawaii held a Seizure Recognition and First Aid Certification training with staff, case managers, and partners of the County of Maui - Office of Economic Development and the Maui American Job Center, who assist Maui’s community with employment-related needs. This group of partners help to identify barriers and solutions to employment and create individualized goals toward self-sufficiency.
We were happy to offer this training in person and look forward to supporting our communities in any way that we can. We are available and flexible to train or present on seizure first aid to any business, organization, school, or entity that wants to learn more about it.

It was an honor to have the Epilepsy Foundation of America’s new president and CEO, Bee Martin Lee, join us for this beautiful lei making event. She shared a bit about her journey with epilepsy and her personal mission to improve the lives of people living with epilepsy through her work at EFA and professional experience in the nonprofit and healthcare sectors. Bee learned how to wili a ti leaf lei and was able to talk story with individuals and families impacted by epilepsy here in Hawai’i. It was so wonderful to get to know her and we are beyond thrilled to join forces and strengthen our shared mission to improve the lives of people touched by epilepsy. Our warmest aloha to Bee. 💜
💜
Late post, but we had a wonderful day making lei and weaving connections with aloha. In addition to the beautiful flower lei creations, we contributed over 150 ti leaf lei or lei la’ī to Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden’s ongoing collection of Memorial Day lei. This is in collaboration with the City and County of Honolulu’s initiative to have a lei on each gravestone at Hawaii’s veteran cemeteries on Memorial Day.
💜
Let's gather our epilepsy ʻohana together to make lei. It will be a hands-on experience and is an opportunity to learn together, make connections, and share knowledge & stories. This free workshop is open to individuals, caregivers, and families living with epilepsy. No experience is necessary; all levels of experience are welcome. This will be a morning full of reflection and relationship-building.
