Where cultural and visual anthropology meets community preservation and revitalization.
Blending In, While Standing Out.
LONG POST ALERT: Today is 1st, the beginning of my filled with holidays from various faiths and cultural significances. Born on the 30th of this sacred month, I grew up in a home where it was the norm to split gifts and see celebrations as my own. As an adult, my gift to me has been using the "holiest of months" to reflect and prepare for the dawning.
Striking the balance of reflection and indulging in cheer is a real challenge. The choice to the or is a . I have friends who reject Christmas and throw ' birthday parties; while other friends throw caution to the wind to on gifts and parties, they'll pay for with next year's .
I'm amused as I sit on the sidelines watching holiday festivities and fights unfold like a or movie. Now, I do accept my invitations to Christmas carol, family holiday dessert competitions, and I bring paper plates and cups at their request (they know I don't cook), and I love how my never make me feel weird when I buy a sensible gift or didn't have time to get one for my . They know, "Tis the Season to Be Jolly" and we'll the second week of once we .
I confess, I join in the fuss when I playfully "countdown to my birthday as the holiest day of the year", while secretly wishing for a simple, birthday brunch with a friend or two. Truth be told, brunch on any day of the year at a trendy spot is a celebration to me. Hint, hint ... I'm expecting calls from friends for my year-round indulgence all this month.
Exhaling as my fingers linger on my laptop keys, I muse about my month. Two more weeks of real work left in 2023, and two weeks of intentional reprieve as I countdown to my "trinity" week: (1) my favorite December holiday, Kwanzaa, (2) my late beloved mother's birthday, December 28th, and (3) the holiest day of the year, December 30th. The day was gifted to me by the "Gods!" (calm down fellow Christians, the "s" was added for dramatic effect).
Y'all I'mma be so hype during these festivities that I'll cherry pick to attend. Yet, know this, while I'm laughing and eating your good cooking, my Near Future Self is already living in my "I Live Seasonal Life". She's preparing to fix a plate to go and jet set to our on afternoon. 🛫
In the meantime, in between time, as I grow into an agency that affords me that , I will enjoy my very full life right here, right now. I Am Grateful.
