Our Story

In 1998, a group of musicians founded Tamizdat as a tax-exempt non-profit with the mission of facilitating international cultural exchange. Since then, Tamizdat has been involved with a wide range of activities. We have booked festival showcases in the US and Europe, organized tours, sponsored events, and for years ran a CD distribution coalition. Early on, it became clear that U.S. visa policy is one of the most significant obstacles to international cultural exchange, so we set out to change that by establishing a sympathetic and affordable artist-oriented Visa Service designed to help performing artists to navigate the US visa system. Today, in collaboration with our affiliated law firm CoveyLaw, we facilitate visas for nearly 6,000 performing artists each year.

In recent years, advocacy has come to the fore and, motivated by the conviction that the international mobility of culture is fundamental to healthy and progressive global civil society, Tamizdat seeks through its program activities to assist the international performing arts community in addressing problems presented by U.S. immigration policy and procedure. Tamizdat’s principal program activities include:
TamizdatAVAIL: The volunteer attorneys of Tamizdat’s “Artist Visa Assistance and Information Line” provide 24-hour pro bono legal assistance to the international performing arts community, including strategic counseling and crisis assistance. The program is sponsored in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and was launched in cooperation with New York Law School. On average, TamizdatAVAIL assists more than 20 arts organization each month. For assistance please contact [email protected].

Visa Assistance: Performing artists seeking U.S. employment visas must have a U.S. entity serve as their “petitioner.” This requirement can create problems for independent artists who lack substantial relations to a U.S. business or organization. In cooperation with Tamizdat’s affiliated law firm, CoveyLaw, Tamizdat addresses this problem by acting as the U.S. petitioner for more than 2000 performers every year.

Outreach: Tamizdat’s experienced staff regularly presents workshops, panels, and symposia on U.S. artist mobility issues at professional conferences around the world, including SXSW (Austin), CMJ (New York), WOMEX(Canary Islands, Copenhagen, Thessaloniki, Santiago De Compostela, Cardiff, Budapest), Folk Alliance (Kansas City), APAP(New York), The Great Escape (Brighton), M4Music(Zürich), YouBloom (Dublin), HWCH (Dublin), IndieWeek (New York), Western Arts Alliance (Los Angeles), Mundial Montreal (Montreal), NXNE (Toronto), The Edinburgh Fringe (Edinburgh), Output Belfast (Belfast), NY Winter Jazz (New York), FimPro(Guadalajara), Eurosonic (Groningen), Palestine Music Expo (Ramallah), Amsterdam Dance Event(Amsterdam), Halifax Pop Explosion (Halifax), Reeperbahn (Hamburg), and Arts Northwest (Tacoma).
