Teaching preschool kids can be exhausting… at times absolutely excruciating. It can also be a joy… at times deeply fulfilling. It is in this spirit that I share with you the following anecdote.
Today I had a great interaction on 56th & Girard while waiting for the 15… an older gentleman saw me passing by his house and followed me up the street to ask if I teach music to the “preschool down the street.” He said his grandson has been singing “Ooo Le Le” over and over and the family had no idea what it was or what language it was and he just had to know. He said everyone in the family was going nuts trying to figure it out. I told him it’s a folk song in Congolese. He was just tickled that I was teaching preschoolers a song in an African language and we talked about how so often kids are just given the same old thing and nobody ever thinks that they can sing or enjoy music in a different language, or understand anything more complex than “Wheels on the Bus.” He was just giddy that I was doing it and “chased” me all the way up the street to ask. He said his grandson never sang anything before and here he is singing an African folk song and he loves it. I told him he made my day.
In conclusion, never underestimate our kids. They are more capable than we often allow them to be. And we will never realize that they are capable of learning a song in a different language if all we ever present them with is “Wheels on the Bus.”

HAPPY WEDNESDAY Early Literacy Academy
About…
At one of our schools, Dixon Learning Center, there’s a 4 year old boy who got shot while playing on the porch with his grandmother. He is currently bound to a wheelchair and it’s unclear whether he will be able to walk again. He is doing as well as can be expected, but can’t attend school or camp at this time because of his situation. He’s a sweet kid so I proposed the idea of all the kids writing a song together for him to lift his spirits. The kids and their teacher did an amazing job at writing some wonderful words, expressing their feelings about their friend. As soon as I read them, the melody came right away and I just started singing it. I’d like to have the kids perform this and get them on the news, to draw attention to the situation.
Thanks,
Robb
