Today, our Board approved a resolution supporting the North Carolina Department of Transportation's application for funding to replace the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge.
The NCDOT requested resolutions of support to accompany their application for the replacement of the bridge through the USDOT's Bridge Investment Program (BIP). The BIP was established by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in 2021, making $40B in funding available over 5 years for replacement, rehabilitation, preservation, and protection of some of the nation's most important bridges.
The Cape Fear Memorial Bridge replacement project is the Board's top unfunded priority, and our Board voted 7-0 today to support NCDOT's application.
There's nothing scarier than missing out on your chance to win a prize and support a great cause. Today is the LAST DAY to share our survey and get entered to win a boat ride for two on the Cape Fear River! Share this post for a chance to win! Congratulations and thank you to Carolina Beach! We are pleased to assist Carolina Beach in implementing and expanding options for alternative transportation modes.
At their October 25th Board meeting, the Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (WMPO) awarded the Town of Carolina Beach $1.17 million dollars to be used for funding the St. Joseph Street Multi-Use Path project. The money is distributed through the WMPO’s Surface Transportation Block Grant, passed through the NC Department of Transportation (NCDOT). The Town will be required to supply a 20% local match of $293,190 towards the project.
The 8-foot wide, almost one-mile-long multi-use path will be located on the west side of St. Joseph Blvd., running from N. Lake Park Blvd. to Otter Rd. “The St. Joseph multi-use path is a major component of our bike and pedestrian plan which will allow residents from St. Joseph Street, Lewis Drive and points north a safe corridor to our downtown and to the state park”, said Mayor Lynn Barbee. “This Town Council is focused on bringing resident amenities forward that improve the quality of life for our residents. We thank the WMPO for their support and town staff for their many efforts on this project.”
The project is still in the development phase as staff collaborate with engineers from Kimley Horn. Public meetings will be held, and plans finalized by summer 2024. The request for bids will go out sometime next fall and construction is expected to start later that year. The estimated completion of the project is Spring 2025.
Congratulations to our September social media contest winner, Myesha! We hope you enjoy your Carolina Beach bike rental! Want to be a winner too?
