Sharing any promotion with someone is special, but sharing your black belt is the next level.
That’s a wrap on Grading #2 for the year: who knows what is in store for the next one! 🥋🔥
⬛️⬛️⬛️⬛️🟥🟥⬛️
New Black Belt: Gab Salaris.
As Cam said; if you want the truth, go to Gab. Honest, hard working and just generally tough as nails, Gab is a measure of where your BJJ is at. Gab came to Rise as a blue belt after training at a few other places with mixed results. He has fully embraced Rise and Cam’s system and rebuilt his whole game on fundamentals. Gab’s defence is like Fort Knox! He was also one of the first to embrace leg locks at the gym and you can’t let him have your feet because he will take them home with him. Gab’s wife Barbara and twin daughters Aria and Ava are a huge part of Rise as well: Aria and Ava are avid rollers and competitors and they’ll be giving dad a run for his money very soon!
Gab kept his black belt speech short and simple, preaching the value of showing up consistently and embracing the grind and the journey. They are a Rise family and they make us part of their family, which brings us so much joy.
Congrats Gab; after 16 years, you are more than deserving of your new rank. We are so grateful that you chose Rise and continue to be such a valuable part of the club.

New black belt: Josh Levy.
Our first home ground white to black belt! Josh has been with Cam from Day 1 and now 12 years later, he’s a black belt.
Josh is a man we all look up to at Rise: he is kind to everyone who walks through the door, has a successful career & beautiful family and beautiful jiu jitsu as well. He always goes out of his way to help us all get better and despite having a busy job and a young family, he’s always there to help us out and towel us up with his technical and well rounded game.
Josh exemplifies everything a black belt should be in both his skills and his character. If you had to pick a person who represents the best of what Rise has to offer, it would be Josh!
In his black belt speech, Josh spoke about how training has made him a better husband, a better father and a better person. He expressed gratitude for those who help him get to training and the value of showing up with a plan to get the most of our training.
Congratulations Josh: a better person is hard to find. 🫶🏼

New blue belt:
Dan is one of Muay Thai coaches who also spends some time with us downstairs! Dan is a gritty roller who challenges himself to improve in every session. He is always trying to help others and Rise in any way that he can.
Congrats Dan: thanks for everything you do for us.

A few new additions to the blueberries! (Blame .katrina for the name).
Nice if you to dress up for the occasion 😂😂
The next of our new blue belts:
Kun told us all to call him Gun when he came to Rise, maybe because it’s a sick nickname or maybe because he didn’t think we could say Kun. Nice try Gun, you can’t pick your own nickname!
Gun is a lovely presence on the Rise mats: he is always smiling and enthusiastic in his studying and rolling. He often brings a note pad to class so he doesn’t miss a single detail which is reflected in his highly technical style and rapid skill development.
Congrats Kun-Mo/Gun: keep taking those notes! We love having you on the mats with us.

The first of our new blue belts: Adrian!!
Adrian is a dedicated and enthusiastic member who uses his long frame to throw up submissions and a challenging guard. He is always positive and supportive of other members as they work their way to blue belt. He also helps us out with photos and graphic design, using his skills from his job at to help us out whenever he can.
Congrats Adrian; a well deserved promotion for a great guy!

Put it in your calendars!
Starting on Gathering preparations this week. We are all set for September 7th. It's a long ways off .. but it's good to plan way ahead. So any and all interested can lock this date in .. can book cheap flights, can cross out those days on the calendar next to your fridge. Prof Rigan Machado is coming out ... and I shall be sending emails to all past competitors and to all coaches in the next few weeks.
This provides a good focus for our training through the colder months of the year - as the Gathering also marks the beginning of Spring in the Antipodes.
The biggest one of the day, and a rise first! Our first black belt: Cam Burnett, also known as Cam Campbell or BBC (brown belt cam, now black belt Cam).
Cam joined us as a purple belt with his kids Angus and Ailish in around 2018. Cam has trained for 22 years in a variety of locations and had a wild game with submissions and moves we’d never seen before, plus a myriad of stories that we would just sit around and listen to.
Cam still has all the wild moves and stories and is a wonderful mentor to all at Rise: his classes are always packed with details and very unique warm ups. He always makes time to help out the lower belts and despite being one of the most dangerous people we know, he is a wonderful training partner to everyone.
Cam’s speech reflected a deep appreciation for the relationships he’s built in BJJ, the value of great training partners and the joy he takes from coaching and watching others grow. He embodies the rise motto: we rise together.
Congrats again Cam, we couldn’t think of a better person to be our first Rise black belt!! 🖤🥋📈
One of the highlights of the day: Cam receiving his black belt. This is his impromptu speech, we think it’s great.
The last of the new blues and definitely not the least:
In his words:
Thank you to Rise for giving me, William and Isabelle a family away from family. Today was special, prior to Covid I wanted William and Isabelle to start BJJ reached out to a few mates Stacey Wilson & who pointed me to Rise.
I made a promise to my kids to join them on the mat. A long time coming but the best decision I made for them and myself. a few years on the kids are progressing well loving the club and making life long friends.
Today was a special day and a milestone for me I achieved my blue belt with two great mates Eddy Flinn and Mitch Gibson.
There’s to many to thank but special mention to our coach and who took time out to help get me ready in between his training and my work and travel commitments. These are two amazing people.
Thank you again to all the other crew at Rise who help everyone that walks through those doors. Here’s to many more years on the mats with amazing people. thank you for all that have been part of the journey thus far…just the beginning!!
Jez wears so many hats at rise: chief floor mopper, travel agent, kid wrangler, mentor to the new white belts and usually host of the rise social events! Without him, rise would be very boring. Not mention he is a tough competitor and a great team mate who is always encouraging and supporting his rise teammates, even if it means coming straight to a comp, grading or training straight from an overseas flight.
Congrats Jez; you’re one of the best!
📈💪🏼🥋
Cam’s grading wrap up:
Rise’s first BJJ grading of 2024 was a big one. We had Dave, Kobe, Simon, Paul and Neil get their first stripes, well done guys and welcome to the intermediate class where the real fun begins.
We then jumped to our new 3 stripers Jesse, Paul and Lucas who now can see Blue belt in their horizon. Great work gents!
And then our 3 new Blue Belts, Mitch, Ed and Jeremy who were put through the wringer rolling only with coloured belts all session but showed great heart and resilience.
Lachie and Angus moved up a step getting a stripe on their blue belts. All the extra training sessions and comp prep has paid dividends. Dennis added a third stripe to his belt as well always moving forward in his own quiet way.
Taylor was rewarded with a Purple for his never ending pursuit of knowledge along with many comp appearances/poduim results. But he’s been told he still needs to do the warm ups.
Our top ranked BJJ female, Sharon (Shaz) levelled up a stripe as well to now have 2 stripes on her Purple Belt.
The big one of the day was that we minted our very first Rise MMA BJJ Black Belt. It was an absolute pleasure to put a Black Belt around Cam Burnet’s waist.
Cam has made a huge positive impact on the gym and helps lead the way for what Rise represents.
I’m looking forward to what the rest the year brings as I’m expecting big things.
📈🥋💪🏼
Our first grading for the year is done and dusted!
A whole bunch of stripes and belts were handed out, including our first rise black belt. More posts on that very soon.
Congrats to everyone who graded and a huge thanks to the whole gang who made them earn it! Grading day vibes are the best.

The team absolutely killed it today. On to the next one…
A fantastic day on the mats with our friends at Phoenix Training Centre & Bear Cave Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

RoD Episode #205 - John Will Back for his third appearance on the show, the Grandfather of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Australia does not disappoint. John is not one to shy away from sharing ...
The lady in the picture is Sara Mayer, the first non japanese wonan to receive a black belt in Judo, back in the thirties in Japan. This lady born in Englsnd in 1896 decided she wanted to learn judo and after starting to study it in London at the Butokwai, the oldest european dojo founded in 1912, she travelled for weeks all the way to Japan. After years of hard training with men in Tokyo and Kyoto, refusing to train in the women only classes, and having to cope with the traditional japanese culture that at the time didn't like to see women training with men, she was awarded the rank of shodan, black belt. When asked why she was not embarrassed when ground fighting with men, she replied that during training one's s*x didnt count.
In a world full of Kardashians, be a Sara Mayer .
Happy International Women's Day ladies.
