[PUB STATEMENT ON STERRA’S PUBLIC APOLOGY]

PUB will not condone any false or misleading claims made by companies like Sterra to promote their products. Such claims could impact public confidence in Singapore’s drinking water.

In Sterra's case, the company had repeatedly published online content implying that tap water in Singapore is not safe for consumption. Its Facebook advertisement in February 2024 had attempted to mislead the public into thinking that our tap water contains harmful micro-organisms such as bacteria and algae. Sterra has since published a public apology and committed to cease its errant marketing practices.

The public apology can be viewed here: https://www.facebook.com/sterrasg/posts/pfbid02b7yaTSB9i4Zi3imTJjPdkqyJSBZ9p3iJDw2pHGmaCd9xmvHFdHfpVuRqwmZMw1Mnl

Tap water in Singapore is safe to drink. Our tap water complies with the Environmental Public Health (Water Suitable for Drinking) (No. 2) Regulations 2019 and is well within the WHO Guidelines for Drinking Water Quality. There is no need for any point-of-use (“POU”) water treatment or filtering devices to further treat the water.

🔍Earlier this year, CCCS investigated Sterra following several complaints about its online advertisement in February 2024. The advertisement falsely claimed that Singapore’s tap water is unsafe for direct consumption without being filtered using water purifiers sold by Sterra.

Sterra has apologised and undertaken to stop making false and misleading claims on the quality of Singapore’s tap water, as well as other claims relating to its air and water purifiers. Sterra will also cooperate with the Advertising Standards Authority of Singapore and Singapore public agencies including PUB, Singapore's National Water Agency to address consumer complaints and publish clarifications for advertisements found to be misleading by ASAS or the public agencies.

🧠 Think Big, Start Small, Learn Fast ⚡

As Lead Engineer of Ulu Pandan Water Reclamation Plant, Qinglin has initiated various first-of-its-kind projects that have improved productivity and generated substantial cost savings.

Last year, Qinglin led a team to build a mobile anchorage device to access sedimentation tanks in a quick and cost-effective manner, replacing the need for temporary scaffolds that incurred installation costs and risked damaging the tank covers. This project was subsequently scaled to other plants, further enhancing cost and time savings.

An avid learner, Qinglin also advocates innovation and knowledge sharing among staff. He frequently organises brainstorming sessions to develop solutions and ways to optimise plant processes, sharing these insights at department learning sessions.

Congratulations to Qinglin for receiving the Exemplary Innovator Award at Public Service Week 2024!

Temporary closure of a section of Bukit Timah Road and Dunearn Road on 31 Aug and 1 Sep

A section of Bukit Timah Road (Cascadia Condominium to NEXUS Condominium) and Dunearn Road (Binjai Park to Jalan Jambu Ayer) will be temporarily closed to traffic on 31 Aug and 1 Sep 2024 between 12.45am and 5.30am.

The temporary closure is for the construction of a new pedestrian overheard bridge near Binjai Park to replace the existing pedestrian overhead bridge, which will be removed to facilitate PUB’s ongoing drainage upgrading works along Bukit Timah Canal.

Motorists headed towards Sixth Avenue are advised to use the alternative route via Jalan Jambu Mawar towards Jalan Jambu Ayer. Those travelling towards Clementi Road will need to make a detour via Wilby Road and Old Holland Road, towards Blackmore Drive.

Barricades, diversion signs and road marshals will be deployed to guide affected motorists. Motorists are advised to drive carefully and observe the information signs displayed.

⚠️Be careful where you throw your leftover gravy ⚠️ You may be feeding a sewer monster below your sink!

Pouring leftover cooking oil, yoghurt, flour, or oil-based foods like soups, curry, gravy, sauces, salad dressing and marinades is a sure-fire way to clog your sink. Fruit scraps and vegetable stickers are also a no-no, as they will not dissolve and might even grow a choke in your pipes.

Keep your sink clog-free by bagging food and kitchen waste and tossing them into the rubbish bin 🗑️

🧪 Leveraging technology to automate processes 🦾

PUB’s Water Quality Department (WQD) carries out over 500,000 water sample tests annually. To preserve the samples during transportation and storage for accurate analysis, preservatives are dispensed to 300 sampling bottles daily—previously done manually.

A WQD team streamlined this laborious process by customising an Automated Preservative Dispensing System in collaboration with a vendor. This system greatly shortens the preparation process to mere minutes without manual intervention, improving the accuracy of preservative additions and allowing analysts to focus on more value-added work.

Despite not having prior expertise in developing such automated systems and without any off-the-shelf solutions as reference, the team was able to guide the vendor by sharing their collective laboratory operational needs to build the system.

Congratulations to the WQD team (Wendy Zhang, Francis Lim, Guo Zhongxian and Raymond Ong) for receiving the Dare to Do Award at Public Service Week 2024!

🤔 Ever wondered how NEWater got its name? It's not just a catchy term; its name reflects its quality!

The name "NEWater" signifies that it is reclaimed water that is "as good as new," highlighting that it is ultra-clean and perfectly safe to drink.

🌞🌧️ As a weather-resilient water source, NEWater cushions our water supply against uncertainty and has become a cornerstone of our water security. 💡💪

Where did our learning adventure lead us to this year? Besides touring our water reclamation plants 💧♻ and ABC Waters sites 😎, we showed participants how chokes are removed from our sewers—a sight and smell to remember 👃

In this , let’s remember to be mindful of what we flush and wash down our sinks, and play our part in keeping our used water system working smoothly!

Photos from PUB, Singapore's National Water Agency's post 17/07/2024

Who’s hungry? 🤤😋

Whatever you throw into drains, sinks and toilets do not just disappear. Most items don’t dissolve in water, including wet wipes or kitchen towels. Instead, they accumulate and feed a sewer monster that will grow and clog your pipes. 🍪🎂

In this , here’s a reminder to:
🚽 Only flush p*e, poo and toilet paper down the toilet bowl
🗑️ Bag and throw leftover gravy and cooking oil instead of pouring it down the sink

We can all play a part in keeping our sewers choke-free!

💡 Limited land in Singapore calls for multi-functional solutions!

To meet increasing water demand and optimise land use, the Bidadari Underground Service Reservoir (USR) was built within the Bidadari Park. This eliminates the need to construct new water pipelines from other high-ground service reservoirs in a limited underground space.

The Bidadari USR is constructed almost entirely underground, except for the pumping station which occupies about 700 sq m of land. This creates about 1,500 sq m of green space above the Bidadari USR water storage tanks for the residents to enjoy. 🌳

Let’s keep our waterways clean for all! 💧✨

As part of , our PUB officers joined SPS Baey Yam Keng 马炎庆 and over 60 colleagues from the MSE family for a Kallang River clean-up activity in partnership with Waterways Watch Society yesterday. Steering kayaks and pedal boats, the group collected close to 30 kg of trash from the waters!

Litter pollution in waterways is not only an unpleasant sight, it can make our water treatment processes more energy-intensive. Litter accumulating in our drainage network may cause flooding during heavy rain.

Public hygiene is all of our responsibility! Together we can ensure our waterways remain clean and free-flowing.
