Great Lakes ADA Center invites you to register for the upcoming Arts-n-Rec session titled “Creating and Fostering Inclusive Wellness and Recreation Programs for individuals with Disabilities,” featuring:

James Rimmer, PhD, Center for Engagement in Disability Health and Rehabilitation Services (CEDHARS) Director, The University of Alabama at Birmingham
Timotheus “T.J.” Gordon Jr., MFA, MS, Research Associate, Institute of Disability and Human Development, University of Illinois at Chicago
Achieving health equity in people with disabilities requires a multi-stage approach that includes person-centered referral to wellness programs and services (e.g., exercise and recreation venues, mindfulness classes, diabetes management programs, etc.), empowering people with disabilities to become self-managers of their own health and ensuring that community-based programs and services are inclusive and accessible. Join this session to learn about a three-stage model for addressing health and wellness needs across the home and community settings that is currently being used in a large federally funded center in the US. Additionally, this session will address barriers people with disabilities encounter regarding community wellness programs and services, how communities can improve access, and ways to advocate for community inclusion in various types of wellness programs and services. Participants will have an opportunity to ask the speakers questions following the presentation.

Did you know that has roots right here in ? Back in 1915, Illinois sponsored the Lincoln Jubilee in Bronzeville—a celebration marking fifty years since the emancipation of slavery in the United States.

When historian and journalist Carter G. Woodson saw the exhibits of Black culture, heritage, and progress attracting thousands of people from across the country to Chicago, he founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History to continue the focus on the unique Black experience within American history.

The selection of February for Black History Month comes from Woodson’s awareness that Black Americans had been celebrating two birthdays of people who had shaped history: President Abraham Lincoln’s birthday on February 12 and abolitionist and writer Frederick Douglass’ birthday on February 14. Woodson, therefore, proclaimed the first-ever Negro History Week in 1926 to encompass these birthdays and encourage the country to reflect and celebrate on all aspects of Black life.

It has since become a month-long holiday observed internationally with focus on the many communities of the African diaspora. Co-Op is proud to celebrate the achievement of Black Americans with disabilities, their rich histories, and their contributions to society.
