Sciatica? If you have lower back or pelvic pain that seems to run down the leg you could have sciatica, a condition where the sciatic nerve becomes irritated and causes pain. So many of us do, brought on by sitting. Good news, though — there's something you can do to bring (often permanent) relief. In tomorrow's Gentle Yoga class I am going to address sciatica, including giving you a 5 pose sequence you can do on your own to address it once and for all. Join me in person or via zoom.

Once in awhile — and to be honest, it's a pretty great while — I come into contact with someone who "gets" what yoga is all about on a deep cellular level, who through years of personal pratice and enquiry has developed and digested the learnings of this amazing practice in a profoundly honest, personal way that I can feel just by being in their company.
Nicole Nicole Anami Becker is one of these people.
No sooner did I get to know NIcole than I started wondering how I might be able to share her brilliance with our Mountain Yoga Oakland community. This Saturday's workshop on the devotional origins of surya namaskar — or sun salutation — is the result.
Don't let the word "sun salutations" scare you. This is a workshop that Nicole has been teaching for over 25 years in which we put the madness of Power Yoga's sweaty 108 rounds aside to return to the practices' original intent: to connect with the light of the sun as a means to cultivate our own vitality and inner light. Slow meditative movement, mantra, visualization and yogic lessons centered on the reverance of the sun. A perfect introduction to the summer.
Consider this a personal invitation. Make time this Saturday to spend an afternoon with a most inspiring teacher and these traditional teachings rarely taught in yoga studios today.

This fall I will be leading a retreat on the island of Mallorca, just off the coast of Spain. A bit of heaven on earth I have always dreamed of visiting. A place I think you might enjoy experiencing, too.
And, oh... my friend lives there.
As a professional world traveler, my friend Andrea could live virtually anywhere, but she chose Mallorca. In fact, she loves her home probably more than anyone I've ever met — and she wants to share it with us. We will take over a beautifully renovated traditional stone farmhouse as our home away from home where we will do yoga twice daily, relax by the pool, and eat farm fresh food. Andrea will take us on outings to her favorite haunts, historic hillside villages and little known beaches. There will be organic wine tasting and lunch under olive trees. Afternoon sailing on the Balearic Sea and a night of flamenco in the evening. And room for the unexpected.
This retreat is already more than half full of fun-loving yogis and yoginis. Sure to sell out. Secure your spot by May 30 + save $300!

"The biggest misconception about surya namaskar, or sun salutation, is that it was designed to be a workout," explains Nicole Becker. "It is a Nature prayer. To the sun coming up, to the light within."
Surya Namasakar is Sanskrit for "bow to the divine light of the sun," and originated in the Vedic period as a practice of reverence to the sun as a symbol of consciousness. "From its esoteric origins," writes Bihar Yoga's Swami Satyananda Saraswati, "Surya Namaskar developed into a practice of twelve postures which weave together to generate prana (subtle energy), aiming towards the purification and rejuvenation of the practitioner."
Nicole Becker has been teaching the traditional approach to sun salutations as practiced in the Bihar school of Yoga for over twenty years. "This modern obsession with 108 sun salutations... my question is can we do ONE with full attention?" Nicole smiles. "In this approach, we move slowly in order to feel deeply." Each of the traditional 12 postures is tied to a mantra and visualization that express facets of light — radiance, nourishment, pervasiveness, illumination, brilliance — to inspire our connection to the light within us.
Welcome the arrival of summer with a celebration of the sun with Nicole the afternoon of June 15. Details at https://www.m-yoga.org/workshops--events.html
