In honor of June as Caribbean American Heritage Month, CDD Council Member Ketrina Hazell offers this unique perspective:

“I was born prematurely at only two and a half pounds and needed to stay in the hospital for my first few months of life. After coming home, my mother noticed my developmental milestones were different from that of my older siblings, so she took me to the doctor. This is when my parents first learned about the term disability.

My parents had no idea what the world of disability looked like. They were born and raised in the Caribbean -- St. Vincent and the Grenadines -- where disability is not visible. Disability is a source of shame. I personally witnessed this when I visited family there as an adult. Accessibility and awareness have improved since my parent’s time, however, there’s still work to be done. I had the opportunity to go back to my parents' home country of St. Vincent on the island of Bequia and I was able to speak to youth groups, the school for children with disabilities and a church to share my story and enlighten them on disability.

All of these experiences push me to continue to grow as a leader, advocate, and person."
