Today's Friday Feature goes to...Chloe G!
Chloe is interested in the significance of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy (CRP) as it pertains to Latino students and how to academically justify Culturally Relevant music curriculum to education administrators. Her research questions focus on choral pieces from Latin America (or written by Latin American composers) that highlight systems of oppression and how these pieces diversify Choral Music Education curriculum within the US for students in grades 7-12.

Last week, Our Scholars had the opportunity to visit Northwestern University of an info session and tour of the campus.

Thank you, Northwestern for making this visit possible.

Our McNair scholar, Samantha Mcksey, is currently participating in the Summer Research Opportunity Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Sam shared a few thoughts: “Working alongside Dr. Vlach at UW-Madison has been an invigorating experience that is irreplaceable and has been a summer I’ll take with me to my next chapters.”

Congratulations to our McNair scholars--Sam, Lexi, and Christian--who participated in this year's Louis Strokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) event in Rosemont, IL! LSAMP supports sustained and comprehensive approaches that facilitate achievement of the long-term goal of increasing the number of students who earn doctorates in STEM fields, particularly those from populations underrepresented in STEM.

Congratulations to Scholar Lexi Leach on receiving the A. Michael Drachler award for her achievements in Biology! May you continue to do great work in your academic career!

Current McNair Scholar NEIU Graduate Students!!

The University Advisory Council (UAC) and Student Government Association (SGA) are looking to recruit an individual to represent graduate students on the University Advisory Council. The term is for one year ending in May 2022. The UAC meetings are held from 1-2:30 p.m. on the third Friday of every month and will be held virtually until it is deemed safe and appropriate to move to a different format.

Any graduate student who wishes to serve or has questions should contact either SGA President Edwin Medina at [email protected] or UAC Chair Nikolas Hoel at [email protected].

Please congratulate NEIU McNair Alum (Cohort 10) Dr. Ruben Echevarria! Dr. Echevarria received his PhD this year and is a Distinguished Research Fellow at the School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University.

We also privileged to have Dr. Echevarria as a Lecturer this Fall in our McNair Program.
