On June 19, 1865, in Texas, the last enslaved people were informed of their freedom. Today, we dedicate this day to celebrating Black culture and history.

Comprised of two letters, this book is a personal testimony by James Baldwin about his life in Harlem, in which he narrates the consequences of racial injustice and the relationship between religion and racism.

Gordon-Reed combines memoir and historical analysis to explore the significance of Juneteenth, delving into the broader context of Texas history and its impact on African American experiences.
