02/16/2023

The Justice Studies department hosted the Illinois Human Rights Commission today at the main campus. The commissioners spoke about what the IHRC does and all the free services they offer. Special thanks to Professor Maurice McFarlin for bringing his JUST 313: Prisons and Jails class to this very informative and engaging presentation!

Stateville Speaks interns and Justice Studies faculty spent the last few days helping write holiday postcards to Stateville Speaks subscribers, most of whom are incarcerated. We want those who are system affected to know there are people on the outside fighting for justice every day, and they are not forgotten.

Please follow Stateville Speaks on FB and IG for updates on the important work this organization does.

Update on FALL 2020 Justice Studies & CAST courses:

All CAST and Justice Studies classes will be either Remote or Online. Currently the schedule of classes on neiuport lists most courses as face-to-face but most will be changed in the near future to remote or online.

Remote classes are listed with a set date/time. This means there may be virtual meetings of the class using zoom, google meets, etc. (synchronous instruction).

Online classes are not listed as having a set date and time to meet (these are asynchronous). Students complete work following the internal class schedule noted on the syllabus (e.g., submit assignments, take tests, participate in online discussions by the courses’ deadlines).

Courses with internship requirements: Internships will not be required and we will be flexible in order to help students graduate. If students find virtual internships, that is welcome, but not required. Contact the course Professor for further details

Justice Studies Department policy for students who will take JUST 350-Field Work Seminar in summer 2020:

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact on NEIU students being prevented from completing in-person internship hours, the Justice Studies Department has decided to modify the requirement that students do 180 volunteer hours in an agency/ community setting. Instead, students taking JUST 350 in summer 2020 will be able to work remotely or online in researching non-profit organizations and governmental agencies that promote social justice or that have social justice initiatives or programs. The JUST 350 class for Summer 2020 may incorporate development of practical skills that are useful in the field, such as grant proposal writing, interviewing, and social research.

Please reach out to your JUST 345 and JUST 350 Professors, or the Justice Studies Chair for questions or concerns. We understand these are difficult times for all of you and want to support you in your educational goals

COVID-19 Job Resources | Northeastern Illinois University 04/06/2020

Knowing that many students and their family members have been furloughed or laid off as a result of COVID-19, Career Development has created a COVID-19 Job Resources webpage to help students navigate a difficult economic time. While everyone who can stay at home should stay at home, we know that many must bring in an income regardless.

https://www.neiu.edu/university-life/career-development/covid-19-job-resources

This webpage includes:

Links to companies and organizations that are eager to fill positions due to the increased demand for a number of essential services from the COVID-19 outbreak. There are some great opportunities in retail, social services, video communications and online services.

NEIU Alumni Association micro-internships. These short-term paid internships help build professional networks while also providing modest income during a challenging time.
Tips and resources for looking for full-time professional positions and internships given the economic slowdown as a result of COVID-19.

Guidance on applying for unemployment insurance, including information on the emergency rules that have been developed in Illinois to try to make the unemployment insurance system as responsive to the current situation as possible.
We will update this webpage with new information as we continue to be contacted by companies looking to fill positions.

Students and alumni with questions or who would like further assistance are encouraged to reach out to Career Development staff. Though we are currently working remotely, we are committed to supporting our students and alumni during these challenging times.

If you would like to talk with a Career Development staff member or schedule a remote appointment, please call our main number at (773) 442-4680. Please also feel free to reach out to us via [email protected] with your request.

After working with advanced students last year, Justice Studies faculty member Kayla Martensen started have introductory students the opportunity to move into the field early by volunteering and networking both within the community, and in NEIU career development initiatives. The experience was a powerful tool for new Justice Students to engage on a much deeper level as they prepare to advance their understanding of, and commitment to, social justice issues.
